Susan M. Damplo of Ardsley, NY litigates in federal and state courts, with an emphasis on appellate advocacy.  She is currently of counsel with the Manhattan law firm of Brief, Carmen & Kleiman, LLP.  She has litigated and argued matters in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second and Sixth Circuits, the New York Court of Appeals, and the First and Second Departments of the New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division as well as filed petitions for writs of certiorari in the United States Supreme Court and litigated federal habeas corpus matters. She has taught Advanced Appellate Advocacy as an adjunct professor of law for Pace University School of Law.  She was selected for recognition in the field of appellate law in the publication, New York Super Lawyers - Metro Editions 2009, 2008 and 2007.  Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.

Prior to beginning her practice in New York in 2000, Ms. Damplo clerked for several years in Ann Arbor, Michigan as sole law clerk to the Hon. Ralph B. Guy, Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Before assuming her clerkship, she was an associate in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Steptoe & Johnson, where she worked on complex civil litigation matters in state and federal courts as well as administrative proceedings.  

In addition to her New York and Michigan bar memberships, Ms. Damplo is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Sixth Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. She is also a member (inactive) of the bars of Maryland and the District of Columbia.

She serves on the New York State Bar Association’s Committee on Courts of Appellate Jurisdiction. She is the 2009 chair of the Committee's Westchester CLE program on New York Appellate Practice, and past chair of the 2007 and 2005 programs.  Recent publications include her article, Ties that Bind, available at www.nysba.org/LeaveworthyNewsletter (Fall 2009), and The Rules of the Appellate Divisions, available at www.nysba.org/AppellateDivisionsRules.

Ms. Damplo graduated with honors from the Georgetown University Law Center. She received her A.B. in government from Harvard College.
